About the Event
Ultrasound for the Emergency Patient
Join Natasha Shanks BVSc MSc MRCVS for this immersive 2-Day Event, in a beautiful setting, with delicious food , and superb hands on CPD . The course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of ultrasound physics, guide participants through efficient machine setup and probe selection, address specific considerations for emergency patients, explore common artefacts encountered in urgent scenarios, and introduce the concept of VPOCUS (Veterinary Point-of-Care Ultrasound).
1. Ultrasound Physics:
This foundational unit delves into the principles of ultrasound physics. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of how ultrasound waves interact with tissues, the production of images, and key concepts such as resolution and penetration. This knowledge forms the basis for effective and informed use of ultrasound in emergency situations.
2. Machine Setup & Probe Selection:
Participants will learn to navigate ultrasound machines efficiently, optimising settings for emergency scenarios. Emphasis will be placed on rapid and accurate probe selection, adjusting depth and gain settings, and utilising presets for swift image acquisition. Practical insights will ensure participants can swiftly adapt ultrasound technology to dynamic emergency situations.
3. Patient Considerations:
This module addresses the unique challenges posed by emergency patients. Participants will explore strategies for patient positioning, handling, and minimising stress during ultrasound examinations. Understanding how to adapt techniques to accommodate trauma, critical illness, or uncooperative patients is crucial for obtaining accurate diagnostic information.
4: Artefacts:
Recognising and managing artefacts is imperative for accurate diagnosis, especially in emergency situations. This module explores common artefacts encountered in emergency ultrasound, such as reverberation and shadowing. Participants will develop skills to distinguish true findings from artefacts, ensuring reliable interpretations in time-sensitive scenarios.
5. VPOCUS (Veterinary Point-of-Care Ultrasound):
This module introduces participants to the concept of VPOCUS, emphasising the role of ultrasound as a rapid, point-of-care diagnostic tool in emergency settings. Case studies and practical applications will showcase how VPOCUS can be employed to quickly assess trauma, abdominal emergencies, and other critical conditions.
By the course's end, you'll confidently wield ultrasound as your ally in emergency settings, elevating patient care through timely and accurate assessments. But wait, there's more! There's the opportunity to bring along your furry companion for practice, and don't miss the chance to indulge in the venue's accommodation, complete with a delightful full English breakfast.
Join us and step into a world where ultrasound transforms emergencies into opportunities for precise diagnoses and rapid interventions!
