About the Event

Course Title: Introduction to Small Animal Ultrasound

Join Natasha Shanks BVSc MSc MRCVS for this immersive 2-Day Event, in a beautiful setting, with delicious food , and superb hands on CPD . This comprehensive course on small animal ultrasound is designed to equip veterinary professionals with the essential knowledge and skills to proficiently use ultrasound technology in the diagnosis and assessment of various small animal internal organs. The course covers fundamental aspects of ultrasound, including machine setup, probe selection, identification of artefacts, and in-depth exploration of specific anatomical structures.

‌

1. Machine Setup‌

Participants will gain a thorough understanding of ultrasound machine setup, including adjustments to optimise image quality. Topics covered will include system calibration, depth and gain settings, and proper utilisation of presets for small animal imaging.

‌

2. Probe Selection‌

This module delves into the critical aspect of probe selection, emphasising the importance of choosing the right transducer for different applications. Participants will learn about the various types of probes available and how to select the most appropriate probe for specific small animal imaging requirements.

‌

3. Artefacts

An in-depth exploration of artefacts in small animal ultrasound imaging will be undertaken in this module. Participants will learn to recognise, interpret, and mitigate artefacts to enhance diagnostic accuracy. Common artefacts encountered during small animal ultrasound, such as shadowing and reverberation, will be discussed.

‌

4. Liver & Gallbladder‌

This module focuses on the ultrasound examination of the liver and gallbladder in small animals. Participants will learn to identify normal anatomy, assess liver parenchyma, and recognise common pathologies affecting these organs. Practical tips for obtaining optimal images and differentiating normal from abnormal findings will be emphasised.

‌

5. Spleen

The ultrasound evaluation of the spleen in small animals will be covered comprehensively in this module. Participants will learn to distinguish normal splenic anatomy, identify potential abnormalities, and correlate findings with clinical presentations. Emphasis will be placed on acquiring imaging skills for a thorough examination.

‌

6. Kidneys & Urinary Bladder

This module explores the ultrasound assessment of the kidneys and urinary bladder in small animals. Participants will gain proficiency in identifying normal renal structures, assessing renal function, and recognising common urinary bladder pathologies. Clinical correlations and case studies will enhance practical application.

‌

7. Gastrointestinal Tract

The ultrasound examination of the gastrointestinal tract is a critical component of small animal diagnostics. This module covers techniques for imaging the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. Participants will learn to recognise normal gastrointestinal anatomy and identify abnormalities such as wall thickening and masses.

‌

8. Normal vs Abnormal‌

In this concluding module, participants will integrate their knowledge by comparing and contrasting normal and abnormal ultrasound findings across various small animal organs. Case studies and practical exercises will reinforce the ability to make accurate diagnoses based on ultrasound images.

‌

By the end of this course, participants will have acquired a solid foundation in small animal ultrasound, enabling them to competently apply these skills in clinical practice for diagnostic purposes .But wait, there's more! There's the opportunity to bring along your furry companion for practice, and don't miss the chance to indulge in the venue's accommodation, complete with a delightful full English breakfast.
