Morning session:

Traumatised Pet or Traumatised Vet – A pragmatic approach to the stabilisation and initial management of the small animal trauma patient in practice

Traumatic injuries in dogs and cats are uncommon, but these patients will often have life threatening injuries that require rapid stabilisation.  Furthermore, the condition of these patients can change rapidly, so assessing prognosis and being clear on initial treatment options and costs can be challenging but is vital to ensure clear communication of treatment options.   We will discuss the principles of triage, stabilisation and initial diagnostics, to help formulate a pragmatic treatment and diagnostic approach to the trauma patient in practice.

Patient safety in high – stakes, high – pressure situations  - techniques to cope in a crisis

Mistakes are common in veterinary practice, and even more so in high stakes, high pressure situations such as when dealing with an emergency patient.  We will discuss why mistakes happen, and the principles of ‘crisis resource management’ – what non-technical skills are required for effective teamwork in a crisis situation?

Afternoon Session:

Tips from the Trenches – Tips and tricks for common emergency presentations

I will share practical tips and tricks that I’ve learnt from 10 years as an emergency vet – the type of advice that you can’t find in the textbooks! During this session we will cover the common emergency presentations of GDV, Feline Urethral Obstruction, canine dystocia, and Diabetic Ketoacidosis.
